The Opportunity

**MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. is seeking a Senior Bioprocess Engineer to develop & scale-up the company’s fast-paced, milestone-driven proprietary carbon conserving bioprocesses. This role is a career-defining opportunity to gain diverse experiences while accelerating the scale-up of downstream product recovery processes from the bench-top to pilot scale, and ultimately to production levels. The individual will have opportunities for consistent multi-disciplinary collaborations with internal Fermentation, Analytics, and Materials Development groups as well as the company’s external partners, especially the potential to support the execution of bench to pilot-scale fermentations as being a part of the bigger Bioprocess team. Adhering to the company philosophy of prioritizing, streamlining, and managing projects & product portfolios in accordance with company milestones, customer timelines, and product specs, the Senior Bioprocess Engineer will have opportunities to work with the department lead towards timely planning and high-quality execution of KPIs along with managing functionally integrated project timelines and work plans.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the hands-up setup and execution of bench-scale downstream processing (DSP) unit operations for both proof-of-concept experiments and benchmarking studies to meet project milestones aimed at achieving product yield, purity, and performance at industrial specifications
  • Design commercially scalable processes for the recovery and purification of microbial fermentation-based products
  • Routinely interface with and provide both intellectual and hands-on support to the Fermentation Group in executing experiments at bench-pilot scale
  • Lay down and execute sampling and sample processing schemes, in addition to establishing new analytical approaches in collaboration with our analytical and materials team for evaluating process streams
  • Collaborate with CMO partners and lead DSP scale-up endeavors
  • Contribute and lead project management efforts for intra- and cross-functional projects, as well as with external partners including CMOs and customers
  • Manage the expansion of the Bioprocess Development group’s capabilities by exploring new technologies and strategies to improve bio-product recovery & purification and accelerate scale-up efforts
  • Contribute to the development of **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***.’s IP strategy & portfolio toward expanding the company’s competitive position
  • Interface with the company’s data management system to record DSP-based data and implement statistical analyses on large data sets
  • Support the maintenance of the company’s product recovery & purification technologies via hands-on equipment troubleshooting & repair

Qualifications

  • PhD, MS or BS in (Bio)chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Process Engineering, Material Science, or a related discipline
  • PhD with 2 years or MS degree with 6 years or BS with 10 years of industrial/startup experience working directly with bench and pilot-scale bioprocess development
  • Hands-on expertise with chemical separations equipment and related analytical devices is a requirement
  • Experience with microbiology/fermentations, bioreactors and bioprocess-related unit operations
  • Solid fundamental knowledge of biochemical & process engineering principles including mass balance & transport, reactor design, fluid dynamics, and process control
  • Prior industrial work with modeling software (ASPEN, SuperPro) and/or building computational models; familiarity with scripting tools such as Python and R is a plus
  • Strong aptitude for hands-on work with equipment along with a rigorous attention to details with experimental design, execution, and record keeping
  • Excellent time management skills, effective with multitasking, and an adept ability to improvise work plans while maintaining efficiency. Prior exposure to project management tools is highly desired
